Q: What partnerships is Mapbox working on?

Thanks for doing this AMA! I?m curious where Mapbox fits into government and how have you showcased the tool stack in a world where ESRI tends to dominate?

In case you didn?t know, Eric is the CEO of Mapbox and Tom is one of the first engineers. So feel free to ask some technical questions and all things future, present and past Mapbox.

the back story is kind of important to understanding why we started Mapbox

Q: What are the most influential projects making use of Mapbox?

before we were a ?startup? and took outside funding we were heads down trying to help NGOs do more with data.

basically we built Mapbox for ourselves, we needed better mapping tools.

so we started building them ourself

What would you recommend to get US Defense & Intelligence community to move its geospatial technology into this decade?

we funding the first 4 years of mapbox all off of consulting work

Q: Do you see Mapbox ever having a "professional services" division where they develop custom web and mobile apps tailored to specific organizational needs?

Mapbox has made a big impact on web mapping. Are there plans to add larger spatial analysis capabilities to impact that space?

How do you think the users used to tilemill/cartocss will adapt to the new version?

@mapsam: we're still really getting started with the government angle: procurement has improved a ton recently, but it's still a very slow world to compete in. a lot of the government adoption we see of our tools is the open source side, which is super encouraging - that govt agencies can actually just build better tools for their really particular problems all on their own. both encouraging on an open source side, and also with government being more self-sufficient with tech

@mapsam: I would also add that Mapbox is highly complimentary with Esri, supporting even proprietary formats like FileGDB https://www.mapbox.com/blog/tilemill-adds-support-for-esri-filegdb-format/

kkowalsky: i think people will be really happy with the post-cartocss world. i worked on cartocss for tilemill, and grew to understand all of its eccentricities. dropping it is going to be a big change, but it also really simplifies how maps are made in an important way: there's no magical transformation to mapnik xml behind the scenes, no pretending to be css. i thinkit's going to be a better platform for building on, and easier to learn once there are more resources in the wild

@gundersen: how are your enterprise sales going in general? Are you finding it difficult to reach larger enterprise clients who already have legacy systems in place

@tmcw: y?all will still support the old version or will it go the way of tilemill?

@mapsam: In short I hope government can leverage our open source tools to extend their internal GIS - like @tmcw said, this stuff takes for even between procurement etc - what is nice about being open source is we get in faster.

kkowalsky: mapbox studio for desktop is now mapbox studio classic - we're planning on making sure it runs on newer versions of osx and fixing some long-well-known problems, but we won't be spending dev time building new features for it.

obviously, just like tilemill, it'll be open source forever so anyone and everyone is free to maintain or adapt it as they wish

robodonut: spatial analysis: first answer is that turfjs is where we tinker with spatial analysis - there are lots of parts of 'cartography' as the art form that are actually algorithmic, and we're constantly figuring out how to make those work better and faster

@gundersen: I work for a startup. We're just starting to get some traction. What were your first 100 days like at Mapbox and when and why did you know that Mapbox was actually going to be a viable business?

robodonut: longer-term though, i like the quote 'any problem can be solved in O(n log n) time with the right data structure', and would say that spatial data in general has an odd mismatch of datastructure and intended usage. so we'd like to start with data structures and go out, rather than try to plug shapefiles into everything forever

@julien regarding enterprise adoption, and your question about viability, it happened when we started winning the make v buy decision for people looking for a new map API.

gisdev-km: sure, see https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-gl-js/pull/1377 - the team at esri is working on 'harmonizing' (ugh am i channeling ogc) their gl-js changes with our master fork. all hopes that it'll happen, though they've been pretty quiet so far.

@kkowalsky makes a good point, seems like mapbox is always pushing towards a moving target, and releasing great tools. But it is hard to pick where to invest time and energy to learn when the longevity of a tool or tech is unknown or unknowable. Do you think you will attach LTS status to any of the tools you release. Is the new Studio just that?

The technical team at Foursquare knew how important mapping was to their core platform, and liked our building block approach.

bddavidson: the biggest immediate priority for turf.js is breaking its dependency on jsts. longer-term i would love to focus on true numerical accuracy, customizable indexing for each algorithm, as well as cross-porting the whole thing between js & c++

Q: What qualities should have an engineer to work at Mapbox?

nicholasm: i think i can safely say that mapbox studio has been a larger and longer undertaking than tilemill or mapbox studio classic were, and it's the result of some real lessons learned.

it's frustrating from the outside to see tech churn, and honestly, also frustrating from the inside as well: we all wish everything was finished before it was finished, but you can only type so many chars at once

Q: Is there any plans to release new Mapbox Studio as standalone application?

but mapbox studio has really landed somewhere that i think it'll last. we're going to keep working on it long after public release, and it's going to be amazing.

stepan: no, never. releasing desktop software has been unforgiving and torturous

Q) What has it been like hiring and working with remote engineers and employees. Yay or nay? Do you still hire remote workers?

@stepan: and most importantly we look for team members that want to grow. We don?t hire for based on who someone is or what they have done, we hire based on what we see someone growing into.

tylerdahlberg: the big change with vector tile processing is that it really formalizes this idea that mapmaking is (processing + design), and makes processing a first-class citizen. like, the most whiz-bang thing about mapbox studio is just that you can import a gigantic file and it gets magically turned into efficient vector tiles

@stepan: we have a repository on github ?/recruiting? and when we come across someone who?s work we like or applies to http://mapbox.com/jobs, we start a ticket on them.

it has been critical for us to look outside traditional recruiting channels.

We are pushing hard on improving our diversity numbers

The new GL + the new Studio pretty clearly show your vision for map design and rendering. But @tmcw I really appreciate your earlier point about focusing on the data?it all starts there. Can you talk a bit about what you all are thinking about creating, managing, munging, etc. map data sources?

right now we are over 28% women, but that means we are just half way there.

@gundersen: did you know the Girls Who Code curriculum teaches mapbox.js??

But diversity means a lot of things. Best advise for other companies trying to improve diversity is to start talking about it.

@gundersen: is there any chance to get remote work at Mapbox if I am not a rock-star as @tmcw or mourner?

It?s amazing how just being super conscious helps you think smarter about recruiting.

I?m seeing an interesting evolution in geo-> the growth of the ?geospatial web developer? this seems to be a skill set thats grown from technologies like MB & Carto etc but has history back to mapserver etc? the increased adoption of geo in general by the developer community must be hugely exciting for your team?

we are trying to figure our remote honestly.

anand: the white whale of gis is a new shapefile, so yeah - our projects geobuf and cardboard are touch different sides of the storage & indexing equation. processing-wise i'm itching to get fancy new tech in production, but it's improving so quickly thanks to cross-pollination between mapnik, geojson-vt, and tippecanoe. those three projects, with wildly different personalities and approaches, have been so productively leaning towards really smart ways to tile out and process data.

How we use github, how we use slack, and how we communicate asynchronously is core to our foundation.

so we have been able to grow our team to ~30% remote. And that does not include being spread between DC -> SF -> Peru -> Bangalore

anand processing data is going to be some combination of 'processing engines that do _the right thing_ as well as manual control when that fails. right now we're moving so close in terms of algorithms making smart choices by default that i want to see how much further it can go before adding optimization knobs in a zany ui

@gundersen: Q) When did you guys figure out a pricing model that works and how did it change over time? How many people convert from the freemium to paid?

Q: how many of the engineering and other technical staff come from a traditional GIS/spatial background vs. something else? (I'm a software dev who happened to find himself in the spatial world)

it was so so so hard for us at first, because we were bootstrapped and the amount it costs us to run our infrastructure was real.

When we first launched Mapbox pricing the starter plan was $500 a month. That is because it costs us $250 a month to AWS, and that was regardless if you used the service or not.

@tmcw: will geojson-vt support partial updates any time soon? and how do you see this affected the need to pre tile data sources?

willcadell: it definitely is. some people at mapbox have come from the gis/cartography/geology/environmental side of things, but lots of us are developers, and it's cool to see the problems of geo gain adherence. i really do think some of them are really neat intercepts of math-geo-art-data, and are just cool examples of combined concepts. routing has been that way forever - part of a core computer science curriculum - and i think other problems could join it

It took us like 18 months to roll out free plans. And I would say took us until the last 6 months to have good free plans that were not a joke.

@tmcw: how do you think, how soon will vector tiles be the new standard for web cartography?

bflood: pretiling & updating are separate problems in my mind - geojson-vt is usually used if the download time is _not_ a bottleneck, but interaction is. it will never be able to fix the download time problem, since it is on the client. that said, geojson-vt may get partial updates to support animation in mapbox-gl.

bflood: but webgl is a totally different ballgame than the dom and we're really starting from scratch for like 'how to partially update a buffer' at all, so maybe geojson-vt is the bottleneck there, and maybe it isn't - we shall wait for the benchmarks

@tmcw: thanks! adding bbox

stepan: in the client? it will be years until there's like 95% adoption of webgl. but what matters on a technical level is that (1) they're the only real option for mobile and (2) on web, they've already been behind the scenes, powering our apis for well over a year

Q: As Mapbox has grown more into web mapping building blocks and dev tools, what would you say are the tools / services you offer that a nonprofit could still take advantage of themselves with light geo / dev knowledge? What?s the best value Mapbox provides to a nonprofit who can?t necessarily hire a GIS Analyst or Web developer?

for high-end visualizations, though, i think uptake will be much faster. there's a big difference between crazy interactive high-data maps and a normal ol' map portal

@tmcw: adding bbox query results or other tiled queries to a master geojson-vt on the client seems like a win, would allow for interacting with very larger data services (1M+) on the fly.

bflood: distributing javascript libraries and encouraging people to install them on their websites is really a big promise to be making, so i'm not surprised google is being a little conservative, especially years ago when webgl was bleeding edge.

Q: is there any plans to release workflow to build tm2 source, like you did for TileMill OSM Bright (https://github.com/mapbox/osm-bright)?

Will webgl solve all of our problems?

@julien: super impressed with maptiks. Analytics is hugely important. Not commenting on any strategic acquisitions, as a general rule.

javisantana: between chrome/firefox/safari not so much - bleeding-edge ie is still in the works, but major props to microsoft for being incredibly proactive in helping us get it running

@tmcw: In relation to @gundersen 's native SDK question. The work you guys have done on https://github.com/mapbox/react-native-mapbox-gl is amazing, but I wonder with your strong investment in native SDK teams if it's just experimental or something that will continue to mature.

I benefit immensely from the open tools and tech you have developed and exposed, both personally (learning by coding and breaking things/putting them back together) and professionally (by using the tools and derivatives in work), so thanks for that. And I?m not alone, lot?s of folks here benefit without crawling too far up the paid plan ladder. Have there been any moments that challenged dedication to open source within Mapbox? Do you see/feel pressure growing to close some things off as adoption increases?

while webgl is often synonymous with 'playing with shaders', mapbox-gl is actually _very_ minimally into shader-trickery and we try to write extremely minimal, tested glsl code. as little as possible.

What about vector tiles data privacy. You talked about it briefly on twitter but I'd to read more about it

@tmcw: you're right but who knows why they haven't released one yet, they certainly have had the tech for quite some time. maybe @jlivni can chime in :simple_smile:

@coleman: the biggest issue with pricing SaaS has been us charging for mapviews. On one hand traffic is a good metric for success, and thus value based pricing. But the push back has always been with the free and $50 plans ?what if my map goes viral?

Not really a question. Just wanted to say I really appreciate Mapbox's commitment to empathetic training (via tutorials, examples, support staff). I'm not a developer at all, but much of what I've learned in the dev sphere is via y'all...so thanks.

What I hope you will see form us over the next 12 months is more focused on value based pricing, and less on raw API metering.

The big push in the micro satellite space is not going to be the imagery, but what you can do with it. I think in the next 12 months you are going to see vocabulary change from ?big data? to "heavy data? - just not a lot of data that needs a lot of processing, but data that is hard to move around and expensive to store.

@tylerdahlberg: imho, most important skill to learn is _how things work_. Being able to piece things together and make maps is one thing, but learning how systems work opens up a world of possibilities.

@stepan: I'll look into FOPTICS, but generally density-based clustering looked pretty slow; I think my best bet is something not optimal mathematically but what makes a good approximation (most probably some form of a greedy algorithm ? Leaflet.MarkerCluster is greedy hierarchical with grid hashing, I could attempt something similar but generic)
